Freedom house reports that Several of the World's Greatest Human Rights Violators Sit on UN Human Rights Panel. It is no surprise that there are human rights issues at the United Nations Useless Nitwits, but the level of stupidity is often amazing.
Take for example the Commission on Human Rights.
[S]ix of the eighteen most repressive governments--those of China, Cuba, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Zimbabwe--are members of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), representing nearly 11 percent of the 53-member body.In effect, the UN has put the 6 most vile criminals on the police force. And people still take this organization seriously. Even Kofi Annan has stated that this is a problem.
An organization that cannot - after how many years? - condem terrorism. (That would after all seem to support Israel, and they would never do anything that might even look like it could be a support for Israel. Which gives you a hint at the real character of the UN.)
An organization who's "Peacekeepers" are often the worst thing that can happen to a region in conflict. UN peackeepers in sex abuse scandals doesn't seem to surprise anyone.
So we have an organization that appoints the worst human rights abusers to the Commission on Human Rights. An organization that is supposed to protect the vulnerable, ends up exploiting their vulnerability. An organization who's leadership, if not corrupt, was certainly inept at managing the Oil-for-Food program, letting Saddam starve his people (every dollar diverted was a dollar less for food).
The UN is now part of the problem of Human Rights violations in the world, not part of the solution. I doubt it can be reformed. It should be tossed on the ash-heap of history along with the League of Nations.
