Police grudgingly admit that self-defense and defense of others is legal. They believe you should cooperate.
In most cases, [Police Lt. Rick Edwards] said, store clerks facing an armed robber have the legal right to defend themselves or others if they fear for their safety. Two of three suspects were arrested about 10 minutes after this attempted robbery at a local hospital - one guy had been shot. The 3rd guy is being sought.
"You have a right to defend yourself, but we're not encouraging anyone to fire shots at people," Edwards said.
