According to this article, New York State does have a version of the castle doctrine.
That means you can kill an intruder who is breaking into your home to burglarize, rob, rape, kidnap or seriously assault you or a family member -- and you won't get arrested. The same goes for anyone who is trying to burn down your home or blow it up, according to New York state law. Shoot an arsonist or bomber in your home, and you're not guilty of a crime.Of course you have less protection outside your home. But it is something.
Seems to be a fairly complete description of what is currently the case in NY.
