A spokesman for the Russian navy said the pirates fired at the Danish ship and twice tried to hijack it before HMS Cumberland and Russian frigate Neustrashimy moved in. The MoD confirmed two suspected pirates were killed by British crew members after the crew of a locally built "dhow" fired at them on Tuesday. The crew of the dhow objected to being boarded and opened fire on the Brits, so the they shot and killed two of the crew, at which time they boarded the dhow.
A spokesman said: "HMS Cumberland was conducting routine maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden. During the course of these operations, they boarded a Yemeni- registered dhow, towing a skiff, which they had reason to believe had been involved in an attack on the Danish-registered MV Powerful earlier in the day.
