Firefighters now admit they were sent to the wrong address on the other end of Grant Park and said the 911 computer system had crashed just before the fire. All the homeowner could do was stand and watch his home burn down.
This tragedy was related to a call for fire department services. Do you think a call about a home invasion, or rape, or any violent crime in-progress would have received different treatment?
Calling 911 is a fine thing when everything works out, but it is a system built and run by imperfect humans, and it doesn't always work the way we want it to. Better have a contingency plan, and in the case of fire services, property insurance. Things can be replaced. Concentrate on what can't be replaced - your life - and figure out how to defend it.
The systems cannot always save you, not even when they work perfectly, and they don't always perform perfectly. Learn first aid, have good insurance and develop a plan for your personal safety. Know what you will do when 911 doesn't come to your rescue.
