Is Self-defense Really Legal in the UK?

Homeowner Kenneth Batchelor cleared of murder after shooting dead intruder - Times Online So it would appear.

A bodybuilder had been threatening his family, and demanding cash. He tries to break in. The homeowner shot the bastard.
The jury at Maidstone Crown Court took just one hour unanimously to acquit Mr Batchelor of the murder of Mr Clements who, the court heard, had an “explosive temper” and had become “fixated” with demanding money from the Batchelor family.
Many people have been sent to prison in the UK for this kind of thing. What is reasonable force? Always nice for the bureaucrats to second guess the crisis situation.

At least they got it right in this instance. Self-defense is a human right
