Police say Eric L. Patten, 20, was intoxicated when he mistook two women as gay men while they stood outside the Post Office Cafe & Cabaret at 303 Commercial St. shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. Patten yelled derogatory names for gays at them and then approached them, police said.He assaulted one of them by slamming her head into a window, breaking the window.
In Orleans District Court tomorrow, he will face charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the window), assault and battery under the state's hate crime statute, disorderly conduct, wanton injury of property valued at more than $250, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer, whom he allegedly kicked and spat at.He is free on bail.
You don't have to be gay to get bashed, you just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
