Lip Service

He was supposed to be a "fierce advocate" for the LGBT community. So far he hasn't done much. Obama White House Names June LGBT Pride Month | RadarOnline.com Of course the "fierce advocate" doesn't believe in gay marriage. (Does that put him to the right of Dick Cheney?)

So he declares Gay Pride Month, to be "Gay Pride Month." June has been gay pride month for long time, by virtue of the fact that the Stonewall Riots took place in June. That's why most Pride Festivals happen in June. So, exactly what did he say? June=June? Yeah, that's a fierce advocate.

Of course he doesn't need to actually DO anything. The major gay organizations are adjuncts of the Democratic Party. If he did something - like Employment Non-discrimination or ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - what promises would they make next year or in 2012 to mobilize the gay vote? If he came out against Prop 8, something that might have actually made a difference in November, well, it would have cost him something important.

I also don't expect him to make a speech on or around the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, calling for equality in anyway. He wouldn't have to go to a Fest - that would be a security nightmare - just an address to urge passage of any of our issues. ENDA or Don't Ask Don't Tell being high on my list.

So he declares that June is June, and no doubt a bunch of folk's from Huffington Post to HRC to whoever will say that this proves what a fierce advocate he is for gay rights. In the meantime, nothing changes.
