Fifteen years ago, during the Bosnian war, Hasan Nuhanovic was a translator for Dutch peacekeepers in the Bosnian city of Srebrenica, a U.N.-protected "safe area." As Serb forcesThe Dutch - who were wearing the hated blue helmets of the United Nations actually provided aid to the folks doing the killing. This was in the form of supplying them with needed diesel fuel.
led by Gen. Ratko Mladic overran the city, some 30,000 Muslim residents, including Nuhanovic's family, sought refuge at the nearby U.N. base in Potocari. On July 13, 1995, after the peacekeepers negotiated with Mladic (with Nuhanovic translating), the Dutch commander ordered the refugees to leave. Despite Nuhanovic's pleas, his parents and brother were forced off the base. They would be massacred, along with thousands of others.
The UN was created at the end of World War II expressly to stop genocide. The reason they do so much else today is because they suck at their primary function. (They suck at everything, mostly.)
In a perfect world, we would stop supporting this bunch of useless nitwits.
Here is my post from five years back, which spells out what happened that day, 15 years ago yesterday.
