Women Fight Back

Women urged to fight attackers: "to live free of fear means the willingness to literally fight back." Thanks to KABA.

This generally a good article, but the organization, profiled, "Girls Fight Back" - has a target audience of college students - has a rather limited view of what constitutes defense. (I am not just talking about guns. I always tell tell people don't get a gun unless you are sure you can use it.) There are plenty of martial arts schools that will teach self-defense, not just tournament fighting. And pepper spray or mace is better than nothing.

Even so, I think their hearts are in the right place.
Society's answer to protecting women, Weed said, has always been to restrict women's freedoms: Stay home; never expose yourself to the outside world; hide; be meek.

"Who can live with that?" Weed asked. "Who would want to?"
Victims would be blamed if they strayed (why were you there? what were you wearing?) from these restrictions. And the best piece of advice:
Among the most critical of those rules, she said, is to never allow one's self to be taken to another location if accosted.

If you go, she said, you go to a remote location, where no one can hear you scream.
