Hurricane Katrina Hits National Hurricane Center

The one group in the whole country who would probably welcome a hurricane gets a visit from the eye wall. What are the chances of that?
The storm surprised forecasters by taking a turn south when it moved over land, slicing across Miami-dade County. In a bit of irony, the storm's eye pased over the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade.
And yes, they did run outside to see the eye.

Collapsing an overpass on the Dolphin Expressway in Miami will cause some major problems with commuting.

Two people have been killed by falling trees. Although sustained winds are in the 75 to 80 mph range, gusts of up to 100 mph have been recorded. 400,000 people in Dade and Broward counties are without power.
[Miami] is hosting celebrities and partygoers in town for the MTV Video Music Awards. MTV called off its pre-awards festivities Thursday and Friday.
Why anyone would schedule outdoor events in Miami in hurricane season is beyond me. They must be from California. (Even if there is no named storm, there is sure to be rain and heat and humidity.)
